They will forsake me and break the covenant I made with them. And in that day I will become angry with them and forsake them; I will hide my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’ Deuteronomy 31:16-17
The word curse from my understanding of scripture is, the consequences of disobedience to God’s voice, statutes, ways and commands, the general word is SIN. God does not curse anyone, but man when he steps outside of God’s will has chosen to abide in curses. Every government has laws and if broken have consequences to its citizens without exception. Biblical curses were established by God as a deterrent to sin
A sign and a wonder
These curses will be a sign and a wonder upon you and your descendants forever. Deuteronomy 28:46
A family curse cannot be hidden it announces itself to everyone who observes that family closely, it increases with intensity after every generation unless the family address the root issues. The words sign and wonder are used in Jesus’s ministry when he heals the sick and casts out demons as an evangelical tool to draw people to him/repent. A curse as a sign and a wonder is also supposed to make a family reflect to ‘wonder’ about why this thing is repeating itself and what should we do to end it, and also help the family draw closer to God
When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the Lord your God and obey him. For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath. Deuteronomy 4:30 -31
Curses are a sign that we have fallen short, you can call it God’s diagnostic indicator, like the check engine light in our motor vehicles, that are supposed to tell us there is something wrong in this family. If you are reading this and you have noticed a certain cycle in your family, it could be divorce, certain diseases, perpetual poverty, alcoholism or even laziness . There is hope, God made it pronounced not because he hates you but because he loves you, he wants you to fix the root issues before the cycle is repeated in your children and your children’s children. If you put in the time and effort, you can be the bondage breaker.
Curses grow stronger with time
Deuteronomy 28:16 Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field.
Deuteronomy 28:16 starts off with a generic curse, basically just describing that whatever project you do in town will not be fruitful, also whatever project you undertake upcountry will fail. Those who have homes or projects upcountry can understand this, this is not so bad. But as you read on, the curses intensify in consequence by the time we are in verse 56 even the property is force-fully taken away
Self-Fulfilling
Curses are self-fulfilling prophecies that intensify in each generation unless the root issues are addressed.
The curse of the house David is a good case study
The number one source of curses >> Disobedience by the head of the home
